Montgomery Street Escalator
Jan. 19th, 2005 10:50 amI got off Muni this morning on my way to work. As usualy, I headed for the UP escalator that puts you out on the corner of 2nd and Market. There was a sign on the wall that said "Bart management has changed this escalator to travel down effective 2/19. For complaints call 650-758-4380.
Of course I have called and left a message. You have to wonder what the reason for this change is? Why did they not inform the public sooner. Since these stations are publically funded, should there have been a town meeting?
'
Addendum:
I spoke with a Bart manager who said that a letter from a disabled person prompted the change in the direction of the escalator. That it violated ADA requirements. I replied that the station had a working elevator. He said she complained that the elevator was nasty and never cleaned, to which he said it was done on a regular schedule.
He said that he will probably be turning it back up again because of the number of complaints he has been getting, and the station does comply with ADA requirements since there is a working elevator at the station.
Everyone knows it is easier to walk down a set of stairs then it is to walk up. I know I need the exercise, but I am just trying to understand the reason. When I find out, I will post it.
