W2's

So does anyone work in a payroll department.

With advanced technology, why does a payroll department that uses ADP or any other big payroll vendor wait till the last minute to send W2's out the door? Is there some benefit to the company for this annoying delay?

We use ADP. I got mine two weeks ago.

You could actually use your last paystub of the year but I know we are sending all our tax documents to 50,000 members this week. We check and double check the mortgage interest and interest they earn and have to make sure they are right (they never are). It takes us about 3 weeks every year to get them ready but this year it took us 4 weeks. Payroll is very similar and I know it is a big headache for my payroll department too.

There is nothing like filing your taxes and then 3 months later getting a notice that the earlier w-2 was incorrect and you have to refile your taxes.

I've been doing payroll the better part of the last 20 years, some in house, some with outside services. It's mostly because a lot of companies, especially large ones, have multiple adjustments and corrections. These changes are usually for the top level execs. Generally speaking ADP or any other payroll service won't do w-2s until they know they won't have any further corrections.

I'm still waiting on mine too.

Ours arrived at the beginning of last week.

I'm waiting 'til the last minute to send out the ones for former employees to give them time to contact me with updated addresses. The current employees finally got them yesterday ... hey, I've been busy. LOL
