Patent

Anyone know how, or ever file a patent?

Wow. You sound so clever right now!

I have heard that the "pay us to register your patent" people are a rip off. I've also heard that if your idea is documented as being in existence then you are a little protected if someone tries to later steal it.

But no. I don't know shit.

You might check with [livejournal.com profile] fyellin. He's blogged (http://fyellin.livejournal.com/22788.html) about his patent.

As far as I know, all of [livejournal.com profile] fyellin's patents were gotten while he was at Sun, and they had lawyers who dealt with all that stuff.

Realistically, if you've got something that you think is patent-able, you should find a patent lawyer & work with them. There is a lot of paper-work that goes into a patent.

And don't even try to do anything about it tomorrow - Tuesday - as all fed offices are closed. We are, according to our beloved leader, taking a national day of mourning. Not for the tens of thousands he has murdered in Iraq and elsewhere but for Faux President Ford.
And don't expect any mail either. So easy to close down an entire government, isn't it?

I have several patents that I got at my last job so they went a patent attorney. Which is probably a good way to go but obviously not a cheap way. For info you can always go to the US Patent & Trademark website (http://www.uspto.gov/)

I've got one, too, but like [livejournal.com profile] hrnypigboy, it was through patent lawyers I worked with. I still work with them, and I'd be glad to ask them for a local referral if you're serious about it.

The first step is to make sure there's nothing like your invention out there. A professional search isn't cheap, but it's your best insurance. And be careful how you document its existance - people do tend to rip these things off, and making the information public limits your rights.

honey, how many times do i have to tell you?

There is no way to patent your oral techniques.

and you can't patent your "Otter Seduction Butt Wiggle."

you just can't.
